Blagoslovi

Original Medium: Acrylic on canvas
Dimensions: 16” x 20”

I have made some version of this painting since I picked up my first acrylics in college. Perhaps I have 5 versions, the first on paper, the following ones on canvas. It is based on a clipping from a religious magazine, which didn’t offer much accompanying information, perhaps it’s labeled Russian Orthodox Man at Prayer. I don’t know any other photo that I want to keep returning to, in painting, as much as this one. With each version, I continue to learn, explore new areas and materials, and slow into a quiet place. And the subject’s portable icon over his heart, with a reza of gold, speaks to tradition and ancientness. Blago slovi, the first words of a Russian liturgical psalm of the Orthodox church, beginning, Bless the Lord, O my Soul . . . It is the one liturgical song that my father, a Ukrainian Baptist minister, sings every night at evening prayers.

Make sure you choose print dimensions consistent with dimensions of your selected artwork.
